The who, what, where, when and why of EditionsVIENTO
What: EditionsVIENTO is a non-profit company dedicated to bringing the finest in music to the world’s woodwind players. EditionsVIENTO wasn’t set up as a non-profit, it just turned out that way.
Who: CEO, chairman of the board, president, secretary, treasurer, custodian and general Pooh-Ba is Gordon Solie, bassoonist and retired music professor at Portland State University.
Where: Located in the beautiful city of Portland, Oregon.
When: EditionsVIENTO really began in 1964 when on an extended tour of South America with the Robert Shaw Chorale and Orchestra. There, I met many composers who were most anxious to have their music performed and published in the United States. As I retired BC (before computers), I told them that I would be most honored to perform their compositions and some day it might be possible to publish them.
Upon retirement from the university I purchased a doorstop size Macintosh and the fledgling Finale music–writing program. Little did I realize that today I would have nearly 150 works in my catalog.
Why: I long ago realized the weak link between North and South America – especially in the music world – and wanted to do whatever I could to strengthen that link. In consequent trips to Central and South America, I have unearthed a treasure trove of important compositions that had never been published – from composers, libraries, universities, monasteries and junque stores. Today, composers are seeking out EditionsVIENTO as a major publishing house for their woodwind music.
Although there is a heavy emphasis on Latin American compositions, especially for the bassoon, we now feature the works of composers and arrangers in eight counties. Chief among the US composers is Arthur Frackenpohl. Art is an internationally known and highly respected composer and arranger who understand the woodwind instruments extremely well. I am honored to publish his compositions.
Other US, Latin American composers are listed elsewhere on this web site. Please take time to read about all of them. New and exciting works are continued to be published. Please consult our web site often.
